Description of project:

During the three days of the conference, we talked about solidarity in Europe; about its institutionalized challenges and attitude towards civil society. Also, we talked about the concept of solidarity in the past, present and future, its potential and its value for democracy. We have defined the difference between solidarity and charity, as well as between horizontal and vertical solidarity. We insisted on the idea that we must fight for the creation of a world and values where no one will find themselves in a situation where they need solidarity.

The Finnish Minister of Education, the country with the best education system in Europe, delivered the opening remarks and welcoming messages. Teppo Eskelinen and Özgehan Senyuva spoke at the conference about solidarity in European discourses. The topic was the current understanding of solidarity in Europe and setting the basis for further thinking and discussion.

Teppo Eskelinen, Senior Lecturer in social sciences at the University of Eastern Finland, spoke about the institutionalization of solidarity, its challenge and its relation to civil society. Özgehan Senyuva, Associate Professor at the department of international relations, at Middle East Technical University, Ankara, encouraged us to ask ourselves if we really understand solidarity.

Jekatyerina Dunajeva, Assistant Professor at the Institute of International Studies and Political Science, Pazmany Peter Catholic University and Research Fellow at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences Centre for Social Sciences, Institute for Political Science, spoke about solidarity in the future and the prospects for its improvement during current events in Europe.

Tommi Laitio, Inaugural Fellow at Bloomberg Centre for Public Innovation at Johns Hopkins University, USA, he spoke about the vision of solidarity until 2030.

Also, there was talk about how to help young people to advance your career kroz volontiranje, o zaštiti životne sredine i o održivom razvoju.

On a personal level, we had the opportunity to exchange opinions with experts in this field, as well as to learn about the good practice of organizations that have experience within the European Solidarity Corps. We received new ideas on how to strengthen solidarity in the youth field and realize our plans.

Europe Talks Solidarity is a series of events and publications within the SALTO European Solidarity Corps. We wrote the article Solidarity, sustainable development and intercultural education..
